HSDeal - on what basis do you think that night flights would have brought jobs to the area? This has been looked at, by an independent authority, and found wanting as an argument. There's simply no evidence to support it. Road and rail investment will support the whole of East Kent and, as pointed out above, had nothing to do with Manston. We all want jobs - but real ones - like the ones being created across the whole of the area in the tourism and leisure industries (check out the growth figures in local tourism) that would be in danger if night flights were allowed.

Huge setback for the whole of East Kent it is a ridiculous decision. Thanet has been given huge road investment on the premise it was to develop Manston Airport for the good of East Kent and then they turn their back.

Thanet should be removed from eligibility of the Regional Growth Fund and the planned £10 million rail investment should be used to upgrade rail links to Sandwich, Deal, Dover and Folkestone where people want jobs.

I can understand some people not wanting night flights,but not airport expansion.Manston could have expanded at anytime on the military or civilian side,So whos fault is it if you didnt take that into account when chooseing to live anywhere near an airport that has been there as long as Manston,and has a dirty great runway you cant exactly miss.No ones fooled by this just being about night flights as we all know that for several years now thanets moaners have been saying we dont want to close the airport down.maybe some dont,while outhers among them certainly do,by trying to put so many restrictions on it that it fails to produce the jobs we should all be seeking,These people have one advantage in that they stick together as a group while vast numbers of airport supporters just sit back and let the moaners beat them every time.it wont stop at night flights.Not when The Old Manston Airport Group is still lurking around and dressing up as a clown right in there with these so called night flight protesters.I know all you anti airporters want to save us so why is it that most of you have the cheek to fly at all?Facts,figures who the hell do some of these anti everythink people think they are moving to places like Thanet and trying to stop just about anythink that would even try to put money into an area that has been poor so long its a wonder we are still on the map,Iv heard things like lazy unemployed,get a job etc directed at the unemployed and you know what.its more ofton than not coming out of the mouths of the ones who do there best to stop just about anythink that would produce those jobs,Maybe one day these people will produce the jobs to replace the ones they do there upmost to wreck but i doubt it,Yes i live in Ramsgate within hafe a mile of the airport .747

I've read that about 2770 people responded, against was 73% ... which is about 1650 people. . . the current population of Thanet is about 129,000.
The main thing I'm getting from all this is the majority of Thanet don't care either way.

So, with Pfizer going, The UK economy shrinking, jobless at record levels, record number of people on benefits and no real change in the near future, where do you no sayers think jobs to east Kent are going to come from? You may want your rural England to stay rural but the cold hard facts of the day is that there needs to be someone willing to invest in the Thanet area for it not to become totally cut off from the rest of southeast England from an economical point of view. I say Manston should put itself forward as the new airport that is so crucially needed in the southeast of England to retain the business all these passengers attract. There is an enormous need for investment in east Kent, just take a look around e.g. Ramsgate and Margate, not exactly thriving, just imagine what could be done in this area with the creation of thousands of jobs. Let Manston grow, build a train station by the airport, let there be high speed trains directly to London in under an hour, extend the apron and the terminal area, the runway is already one of the longest in England, it's perfect for attracting the investment needed, forget about an airport in the Thames as suggested by the London mayor. If you are pro east Kent and want to see this area flourish as it once did, support Manston!! Don't be afraid of change, support Manston and you support the future of east Kent!

Ah but the trick is - what is the view of the electorate? The No Night Flighters imagine they constitute a majority of the electors of Ramsgate. They don't. I did a straw poll in one street, under the flight path, and not one registered a No Night Flights stance. They all want the airport to succeed.
I am now exposing the NNF (Sounds like a far right Austrian party - and from their behaviour, I may be right.)to the test of opposition.

A lot more people, Ramsgate people, are coming out in favour of the airport and allowing some Night Flights.

So the decision of the Ramsgate Labour Party, cringers almost to a man or woman, to imagine that the majority of Ramsgate people oppose the airport exposes them for what they are. Populists at any price. To VOTE against jobs at the airport is a cynical and paltry move of the 1st Magnitude. If David Green spent less time huffing and puffing after every bandwagon, he'd perhaps be a little more cerebral and little less Gung Ho. Has hell frozen over yet?

Charlie Buchanan was in the paper last week confirming that there are up to 12 night-flights per month at Manston, and this is BEFORE they have permission to fly at night. I remember the old Section 52 Agreement which was drawn up when the terminal was built. It banned night-flights, full-stop. When TDC decided the replace the Section 52 with the 106 they told us that the new agreement offered better protection. I even had a letter from Dr. Ladyman in which he assured me of this. Yet we are now getting far more night-flights than we ever did. Looks like the people of Thanet were sold a lemon.

Which raises the question of what it would take to be able the say that the town - Ramsgate, Herne Bay, wherever - is against night flights.

(Incidentally, do contact your local councillor and ask when the public consultation will start.)

We're only getting a consultation, not a referendum, but we can dream... So, if we DID have a referendum and EVERYONE said "No", that would be clear enough. If the MAJORITY said "No", that would have to do.

At the moment it's a bit like the cat food ads - the majority of residents who have expressed a preference are against night flights.

Everyone is entitled to comment, anonymously if they wish. I have yet to delete a comment, but it does get dull when comments descend into sniping, rather than sticking to the point or making a point.

Tony: regarding your point about minority/majority. The thousands who are against night flights are indeed a minority when viewed against the tens of thousands who live in Ramsgate or Herne Bay.

However, if you divide the local residents into three groups (those for, those against, and the don't know/don't care) it's clear that the overall balance is strongly against night flights.

A minority of people (42%) bothered to vote in Thanet in the recent local elections. The non-voting "silent" majority have to live with what the others chose. That's how it works in this electoral democracy - if you say nothing, nobody listens.
